Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Literature Exchange?

The literature exchanges are one of the most longstanding events in the Yorkshire tourism calendar.

An ideal opportunity for tourist attractions, shops, events and activity operators to meet with accommodation providers and Tourist Information Centres (TICs) to ensure their promotional literature is displayed and distributed as far and wide as possible.

For accommodation providers and TICs this is a great chance to meet people from local tourist attractions, find out more about what's going on in the area and ensure you're fully prepared when guests ask for your local recommendations.

I arrange for my promotional literature to be distributed with a distribution company. Why should I attend a literature exchange?

This event is a perfect complement to your existing distribution strategy and it is well worth taking a few hours out of a working day to attend. Many of the accommodation providers and TICs still love to do things the traditional way and there is no substitute for a face to face opportunity to promote your business.

We have leaflets delivered to our premises on a regular basis. Why should I attend literature exchange?

This is a chance to meet the owners and employees of local businesses and attractions face to face - you can find out so much more about a business and therefore sound even more knowledgeable when your guests ask questions of you. It's a great chance to do a bit of networking and open up to cross-promotional opportunities.

Do I come along as a distributor or a collector?

If you are an attraction, shop, restaurant, café, event, activity operator and have leaflets that you'd like to see displayed in accommodation across the county then you are a distributor. If you're a supplier to the tourism industry then this is the ideal option for you too. Distributors are also welcome to visit the stands to network and collect literature.

If you wish to just come along and meet the distributors and stock up this is a fantastic opportunity for you to collect all the supplies you need to satisfy your guests' requirements ahead of the busy school holiday period. You need to register as a Collector. Please note that registered collectors cannot distribute literature on the day.

Do I need to pay?

The event is free for all collectors who wish to attend. If you have your own table or stand (no more than 5ft in length) then the event is also free. If you need a table to be provided then the charge is £10 - this is to cover the hire charges.

How do I register to come along?

Please register your attendance here.

Will you be co-ordinating pre-orders?

Due to decreased demand over the years there will be no co-ordinated pre-orders.

Timings and advice for Distributors

If you have ordered a table you will be provided with one, uncovered 5ft table and chairs. You can dress this table and display your literature however you choose.

Set-up will be from 9.30am and distributors MUST be ready to greet people by 10.45am. The event finishes at 2:00pm and all distributors will be required to stay until the close of the event.

Please park and unload from the car park through the gates on the left hand side of the auction mart. Make yourself known to a member of Welcome to Yorkshire staff who will help you to your designated table. If you would like to table share or be placed near a particular business, please indicate this at time of booking and absolutely no later than one week prior to the event.

Please remember to wrap up warm and wear sturdy footwear. The Auction Mart, by nature of the venue, can be very cold!

Advice for first time distributors:

It is worth putting some consideration into making your stand as appealing as possible.

Some collectors and distributors find it very useful to bundle 25/50 leaflets in elastic bands just to make it easier for collectors to pick up and carry back to their premises as neatly as possible.

It might be worth considering how else you can use this opportunity to market your business and get collectors' attention - do you run a business card raffle for example or offer product tests or ‘Fam Trips'?

There will be many of the county's TICs at the event itself as well as over 100 accommodation providers, giving you the opportunity to pass on many of your leaflets and associated literature. Please ensure you have sufficient literature supplies to manage this volume of visitors

Timings and advice for collectors

The Literature Exchange is open to collectors from 11am until 2pm - you can drop in at any time between those hours to collect.

Please remember to wrap up warm and wear sturdy footwear. The Auction Mart, by nature of the venue, can be very cold!

Advice for first time collectors:

With over 100 distributors there's an opportunity to collect a huge amount of literature. So please give consideration to how you might want to collect. You can pick and choose what you wish to take but if you'd like a lot you can make multiple trips back the car but people have been known to bring shopping trollies and even prams to load up!

Why Thirsk auction mart?

There are other literature exchanges taking place across the county. The Welcome to Yorkshire Literature Exchange has always been in this particular part of the county. We have found this location ideal in terms of accessibility for the maximum number of attendees and general space required.

How else can I make the most of the Literature Exchange?

We ask that all those who have registered also invite their contacts to come along to the event. It's a good opportunity to catch-up with your own network and let them know where they can come and see you.

You can also shout about it on Twitter - why not use this as a chance to put a face to the twitter name and arrange to meet up with your followers in the industry?
